Grocery Shopping 101

Are you overwhelmed by the vast selections found in grocery stores today? Most stores can devote an ENTIRE aisle to bread, each one claiming to be healthy or whole grain or something else you’ve heard thats good for you. You don’t have the time or the patience to scour the nutritional information of every loaf so its eenie meenie miney moe and on to the next item on your list (where you are unfortunately faced with the same dilemma). I am completely OCD when it comes to buying packaged food at the grocery store. I actually DO scour the back of EVERY nutrition label and when I find the best of the best I’ll make a special trip just to get it. When I go grocery shopping its never a one-stop trip which is inconvenient but worth the hassle in my opinion. Today is your lucky day because I’m about to make your grocery trips a WHOLE LOT EASIER!! Here are a few of my top picks for healthy grocery choices. And I must note that you won’t be sacrificing taste for better health. I’ve tried and compared a number of products – these are hands-down WINNERS!!

FIN_goldFinlandiaHeavenly Light Swiss Cheese the only store I’ve been able to find this at is Trader Joe’s so I usually stock up when I go. I love to eat this cheese on wraps, sandwiches and most especially crackers. I seriously would never guess it was light!

Dannon – Light & Fit Yogurts low carbs, low sugar & low calories! This is an unheard of combination for yogurt! The Vanilla Cream-flavored Carb & Sugar Control yogurts are to die for!! I have one every morning at breakfast and another one after dinner for dessert with fresh fruit. I also like the smaller portioned sizes. These are sold in 4-packs and you can find them at Fred Meyer, Walmart or QFC. The Individual Dannon yogurts are great as an afternoon snack. I like to mix in wheat bran, raw oats and a touch of granola – this keeps me full for a long time. These are a bit easier to find: Fred Meyer, QFC, Safeway, Winco or Walmart.

Oroweat – Double Fiber Bread & English Muffins absolutely delicious and perfect in every way.  It has a tender texture and wonderful taste. Best of all they don’t gip you on the size. Twice as much fiber & half the calories of the average loaf – ONLY 70 CALORIES A SLICE!! How do they do it? My husband is the pickiest eater I know and even he prefers this bread to any other. You can find this just about anywhere.

Nancy’s – Low-Fat Cottage Cheese if you aren’t a big fan of cottage cheese you haven’t tried Nancy’s. This stuff is so creamy and fresh I’ll eat it for dessert with a sliced pear (yummmmm). It also has a much lower sodium content than most cottage cheese manufactures and about 10-20 fewer calories per serving (without sacrificing serving size). AH creamy val PB OrganicArrowhead Mills – Organic Creamy Valencia Peanut Butter for some reason valencia peanuts are naturally sweeter than regular peanuts. I love to mix this with almond butter and bettern’ peanut butter.
